Matilda Bay Brewing Company’s Alpha Pale Ale has been named Champion Beer at the second annual Sydney Royal Beer Competition.

The Alpha Pale Ale went up against more than 100 commercial and boutique contenders, with excellence and production innovation recognised as the key criteria behind the judging of the top prize.

As part of the Sydney Royal Food Show, The Sydney Royal Beer Competition represents the diversity of Australia’s brewing industry and highlights the quality of the industry.

Matilda Bay’s Matt Salter said the title was a fantastic way to kick off the beer award season.

“At Matilda Bay, we’re all about creating Australia’s best craft beers and this award is an amazing acknowledgement,” he said.

Inspired by the American craft beers, Alpha Pale Ale has won a number of medals at previous Australian International Beer Awards (AIBA) and the Australian Good Taste 2004 Beer Awards.

The 2008 AIBA will be presented in Melbourne on March 27.
