McLaren Vale Beer Company (MVBeer) has announced the release of VALE/LGR, a "new world craft lager" that will be on tap at selected venues.

MVBeer general manager of operations, brand and hospitality Josh Stuart told TheShout the introduction of VALE/LGR will be at the expense of the VALE/DRY variant.

He said the new beer is "an updated version of what we think a craft lager should be".

"The Dry didn't hit the mark in some circles as it was unfiltered and targeted squarely at the crossover consumer. If we're successful, this will satisfy these consumers as well as the craft drinker who is looking for a 'sessionable' but engaging lager," Stuart said.

Head brewer Jeff Wright said MVBeer has tried hard to achieve "an old-world backbone with a traditional European lager body, but with the artful addition of new world hops".

"Our aim was to create a lager that both the non-craft and the craft drinker would be able to enjoy. We think that Australia is in need of a great craft lager that is harmonious with old world drinkers but that will also engage craft drinkers who are looking for something lighter with flavour," he said.

Filtered for smooth and refreshing crispness with medium carbonation, the 100 per cent malted grain profile is a combination of Pilsner, Carapils and Light Munich, while the hop bill includes the noble German hop Tettnang, Australia's Helga, and Pacifica and Waimea from New Zealand. The sweet malt characters are balanced by the earthy spice, fresh citrus kick and floral aroma derived from the hops.

MVBeer said the release of their new summer staple is timely on the back of VALE/DRK's Trophy and Gold medal win for best draught lager at the recent Royal Perth Beer Show.

"We've really found our stride in the last 12 months with the release of VALE/IPA and our VALE/EXP range and now a very sessionable staple in VALE/LGR," Stuart said.

"We like to think that we've got something for everyone and that we're bringing people into the world of craft beer at both ends of the spectrum."
