Merivale has continued its diversification with the opening of a Cantonese-style dumpling bar in a Sydney laneway.

A ribbon-cutting ceremony took place on Wednesday, with Sydney Lord Mayor Clover Moore joining Justin Hemmes for a symbolic opening to Mr Wong in Bridge Lane.

The City of Sydney (CoS) and Moore are advocates of initiatives to better utilise Sydney's downtown laneways, and support Merivale's reinvigoration of these areas. [continues below]

The hospitality group has similarly opened offerings in Ash Street, and more recently the small bar Palmer & Co in Abercrombie Lane.

"Bridge Lane is a great example of a beautiful, historic laneway that's been underutilised and is now being brought to life with the opening of Mr Wong," said Hemmes.

Moore said Sydneysiders have called for great places to eat late at night and interesting, quirky places to go out to – "it's good to see new places opening to meet that demand".

Mr Wong opens to the public today.
