Top 500 Bars is a new list that ranks the best bars across the world, as decided by artificial intelligence and online data.

Described as “created for the people, by the people,” the ranking was created with the intention of bringing a digital revolution to the drinks industry. The algorithm gathers thousands of pieces of data from across the internet in over 20 languages, scouring different platforms, publications and reviews to collect information from not only experts, but the everyday person.

Top 500 Bars website describes the motivation for taking this approach, and says: “As the saying goes: ‘we are smarter than me.’ It’s about finding a complementary ranking with existing selections to highlight the daily work of individuals who drive this industry. Because in the end, every opinion counts.”

The top 100 of this list was announced this week, after the further 400 were announced from July to October. Among this top 100 were five Australian bars, listed in order below:

  • Maybe Sammy, Sydney: number 55
  • PS40, Sydney: number 60
  • Black Pearl, Melbourne, number 65
  • The Baxter Inn, Sydney: number 78
  • The Everleigh, Melbourne: number 93

Black Pearl celebrated their placing on their social media, writing: “Cheers @top500bars ! So humbled to be amongst these great bars and our mates near and far.”
