Beverage packaging giant Orora has initiated court proceedings against Asahi Holdings (Australia) in relation to a canning contract which was cancelled in September.

Fairfax Media has reported that Orora is seeking documentation relating to Asahi’s dealings with other packaging suppliers and has taken action in Victoria’s Supreme Court.

In a statement to the ASX, Orora said: “Orora confirms that it has initiated legal proceedings of a preliminary nature in relation to a tender process for the future supply of beverage cans to Asahi’s liquor division.

“As this matter is the subject of a legal process, it is not appropriate to comment further.”

The company added that it is in full compliance with its disclosure obligations under the ASX Listing Rules.

Orora has been in business with Asahi since 1987 and Fairfax reports that the contract was worth 1.6 billion cans a year.

A spokesperson for Asahi told TheShout that as this is a matter before the courts the company will not be making any comment.
