Three full sets of Penfolds Grange magnums spanning vintages from 1979 to 1998 will be auctioned by virtual wine merchant GraysOnline from May 22.

Each collection includes all 20 wines from each vintage, with 1979 the inaugural Penfolds magnum. They each have an estimated value of up to $25,000.

While Penfolds Grange has previously been made available on the website — along with a growing number of major Australian wines — this marks a unique opportunity to access such a rare, broad collection of the collector bottles, said GraysOnline CEO, Cameron Poolman.

“This auction will give premium wine collectors the chance to get their hands on a remarkable collection of Australia’s most iconic red wine,” he said.

The three Penfolds sets are anticipated to draw attention both here and overseas, with 500,000 registered site users in Australia alone. International registration numbers are expected to rise prior to the Penfolds auction.

The Penfolds collections are from an Australian wine investment company that collapsed in 2005. The wines have been stored in ideal conditions.

Bidding for the three sets of Penfolds Grange magnums will commence at 4:00pm on Thursday, May 22, and end on Wednesday, May 28.
