A Sydney restaurant will open a $15,000 bottle of Champagne this Australia Day (Jan 26).

Guests at the Blue Angel in East Sydney will each be served a glass from the 18-litre bottle as part of the days’ celebrations.

The bottle, which is a non-vintage rose, will be opened to celebrate the rare occasion of Australia Day and Chinese New Year falling on the same day.

“This has not happened in 95 years,” said owner Marcello Marcobello. “As well, we are celebrating the restaurant’s 48th birthday, so that’s three reasons to celebrate.”

Marcobello also said the restaurant also has a a 38-litre bottle that will be opening on their fiftieth birthday in 2011.
