Wine professionals in Sydney and Melbourne are being invited to enroll in sommelier programs and examinations.

Run by the UK-based Court of Master Sommeliers, the programs consist of a two-day introduction course and examination and a Certified Sommelier Examination.

The courses are the first two levels of the four necessary to become a Master Sommelier — the ultimate professional credential worldwide for sommeliers. The program demands skills in practical areas: tasting, service and salesmanship, in addition to extensive wine knowledge.

The first Master Sommelier examinations were held in London in 1969. In 1997 the Court of Mater Sommeliers opened a US chapter. There are now more than 160 Master Sommeliers around the world.

The introductory course and examination will take place in Melbourne between August 27 and 28, and in Sydney between August 30 and 31. Placements are $500.

The Certified Sommelier Examination will be held in Melbourne on August 29 and in Sydney on September 1. Placements are $400.
