Chardonnay wasn't the only winner at the 2012 Macquarie Group Sydney Royal Wine Show, according to chairman of judges Iain Riggs, who also paid tribute to the performance of Clare Valley Riesling and Hunter Valley Semillon.

Chardonnay picked up 22 gold medals at this year's show across a range of regions and differing styles.

But Riggs told TheShout on Friday that other varieties were also noteworthy performers, along with the strong showing from "young gun" winemakers Peter Dredge, Adam Wadewitz and Dan Buckle.

He said that of the larger players, Accolade Wines continued to impress in "flying the premium flag".
