William Grant & Sons has announced it has acquired the Drambuie Liqueur Company Limited, owner of the Drambuie whisky liqueur brand.

William Grant chief executive Stella David said Drambuie is a natural fit for the company's portfolio.

"It has a very rich history and a great story to tell and we are delighted to be in a position to start to re-engage with existing drinkers and to connect the brand with an entirely new generation of consumers."

Drambuie CEO Michael Kennedy said Drambuie should be able to achieve its full potential as part of a larger and more diverse organisation.

"I look forward to working with the William Grant & Son’s team as we smoothly integrate the acquisition and help realise the benefits for both companies," he said.

There is no word at this stage on the implications for Drambuie in Australia, where the brand is currently distributed by McWilliam's Wines.
